Broncos Reached Out To Clay Matthews But Were Unable To Reach Agreement

Update: Matthews’ agent released a statement clarifying that the veteran remains open to playing in 2020 if it’s the right opportunity.

Tom Pelissero points out Matthews’ deal with the Rams included offsets for the $2 million bonus he was still owed, so he wouldn’t make any new money in a deal with a team for less than that.

According to Adam Schefter, the Broncos inquired about signing free-agent LB Clay Matthews in the wake of the injury to Von Miller

However, they were informed by Matthews that the veteran is “not going to play” in 2020.

Matthews has remained a free agent despite being linked to a couple of other interested teams who need help on defense, so this explains why he’s still available.

Matthews, 33, is a former first-round pick of the Packers back in 2009. He played out the final year of his six-year, $69.73 million contract and made a base salary of $10.4 million for the 2018 season.

The Rams signed Matthews to a two-year contract worth up to $16.75 million last year. However, Los Angeles opted to release him earlier this offseason.

In 2019, Matthews appeared in 13 games for the Rams and recorded 37 tackles, eight sacks, two forced fumbles and three pass defenses.
