New Buccaneers GM Jason Licht told reporters at the Scouting Combine that they are “absolutely” looking to add a quarterback at some point during the offseason to compete with Mike Glennon next year.
โAbsolutely,โโ Licht said, via Theย Tampa Tribune. โNew coach, new regime, you canโt just hand the keys over and say this guy is our starter. You have to see what he is, and competition drives the best out of everybody. So, thatโs what weโll be looking for.โโ
HCย Lovie Smith mentioned earlier in the week that they would consider taking a quarterback at No. 7 overall, depending on how things play out this May.
“I know enough about that draft to know, yeah, thereโs someone that would be worthy of the seventh pick because everything is on the board right now,โ Smith said, perย Rick Stroud of Theย Tampa Bay Times.ย ย โWhenever you have a chance to get a franchise quarterback, you have to consider that.โ
โMike did some good things. But he did some good things as a rookie,’‘ Smith said.ย “To say right now that Mike is the answer and heโs our quarterback of the future and weโre going to build around him and give him a 20-year contract right now, youโre not there.”
The Buccaneers recently signed veteran QBย Mike Kafkaย to a contract, but it seems likely that they will add more competition in the coming weeks. Some have speculated that they could look to the free agent market for an option likeย Michael Vick,ย Matt Casselย orย Josh McCown.
