Jason La Canfora, citing sources close to the situation, reports that the Chargers have few options but to exercise their option to join the Rams in Los Angeles now that their ballot initiative failed for a new stadium in downtown San Diego.
According to La Canfora, the Chargers expected the measure to be defeated all along but the results wound up being worse than they anticipated.
Ownership sources tell La Canfora that they believe Chargers owner Dean Spanos will elect to move the team to Los Angeles.
“If Dean stays, it’s not because he thinks he can get a stadium in San Diego,” an ownership source tells La Canfora. “It’s just because he doesn’t want to take the deal in Inglewood.”
“I guess you could stay and wait around some other option to emerge, but I’m not sure that’s very feasible,” a separate source tells La Canfora. “Where else is he going to go? London? San Antonio? I can’t see that.”
One option for the Chargers could be to get an extension to decide on whether to join the Rams in L.A. but La Canfora’s believe this still would do little for the team’s hopes in San Diego.
La Canfora adds that there’s no secret plan in place for the Chargers and many owners and people close to Spanos believe it will be surprising if he doesn’t relocate the franchise.
We’ll have more regarding the Chargers and a new stadium as the news is available.
