According to Ian Rapoport, Chiefs DT Chris Jones is not present at the start of mandatory minicamp and is not expected to join the team.
Jones is negotiating a new contract with the Chiefs, but Rapoport says talks have stalled. Jones will be subjected to fines for holding out of minicamp.
Negotiations with Jones had been ongoing. Jones is set to become a free agent in 2020, but the Chiefs would like to sign him to an extension before then.
After moving on from LBs Dee Ford and Justin Houston and S Eric Berry, Jones will be counted on to be one of the leaders of the defense.
Jones, 24, is a former second-round pick of the Chiefs back in 2016. He’s currently in the third year of his four-year, $6.231 million contract and set to make base salaries of $916,476 and $1.19 million over the final two years of the agreement.
In 2018, Jones appeared in all 16 games for the Chiefs and recorded 40 tackles, 15.5 sacks, an interception returned for a touchdown, two forced fumbles and five pass defenses.
