Vikings GM Rick Spielman told reporters on Friday that QB Christian Ponder “will be” on the team’s 2014 roster, per Ben Goessling.
- However, Spielman seemed to imply that they intend to bring in a younger quarterback at some point.
- Spielman added that the plan is to add two quarterbacks this offseason.
The has said that they would like to re-sign Matt Cassel who just recently voided his contract and is set to test the free agent market in a matter of weeks. Cassel will most likely look for an opportunity to at least compete for a starting job.
Yesterday, Goessling offered some “plan B” quarterback options for the Vikings to consider and specifically mentioned Mark Sanchez and Ryan Mallett as two guys Minnesota could consider bringing in depending on how things go in the coming weeks.
Ponder, 25, hasn’t come anywhere the type of player the Vikings were hoping he could be when they used the No. 12 overall pick on him back in 2011. He’s entering the final year of his rookie contract and will make $1,760,277 for the 2014 season.
