Ed Werder of ESPN reports that the Cowboys are continuing efforts to sign QB Dak Prescott and WR Amari Cooper to contract extensions following the record deal they agreed to with RB Ezekiel Elliott.
According to Werder, Dallas has remained focused on Prescott and are making a “late run” to get him signed long-term. However, Werder says there’s nothing imminent with Cooper at this time.
The Rams just locked up QB Jared Goff to a four-year, $134 million extension that includes an NFL-record $110 million in guarantees, so you can expect Prescott to be looking to top these figures in his next deal.
A report surfaced a few weeks ago that Prescott turned down an offer from the Cowboys that would pay him $30 million a year and is instead seeking $40 million per year from Dallas. However, reports later mentioned that this was “somewhat misleading.”
The expectation has been that Prescott will end up between $34-$35 million when all is said and done.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones previously made it clear that the team won’t balk on signing Prescott to a long-term deal.
โWeโre sold on Dak, and we do want to have him for the long term,โ Jones said via Pro Football Talk. โWe think heโs worthy of investing in for the long term. . . .We see real upside in Dak. You donโt have it all yet.โ
Prescott, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2016. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $2.72 million contract and set to make a base salary of $720,000 for the 2019 season.
In 2018, Prescott appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 3,885 yards to go along with 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He has also rushed for 305 yards and six touchdowns.
We’ll have more regarding Prescott and the Cowboys as the news is available.
