Cowboys Pick Up Over $7M Of Cap Space By Reworking OT Tyron Smith’s Contract

Update:

Todd Archer confirms that the Cowboys did, in fact, add a voidable year to Tyron Smith’s contract, which brings the cap savings to $7.12 million for Dallas.

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the Cowboys recently converted $8.9M of OT Tyron Smith base salary into a signing bonus.

This move created $6.675 million in cap space for Dallas to work with this year unless they added a voidable year to the agreement, which would instead bring the cap savings to $7.12 million.

The Cowboys now have some additional room to add free agents to their roster if need be or they can roll over the remaining cap space into 2021.

Smith, 29, is a former first-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2011. He signed a ten-year, $109 million contract with Dallas back in 2014 that includes $40 million guaranteed.

Smith was set to make a base salary of $10 million for the 2020 season.

In 2019, Smith appeared in 13 games for the Cowboys, making 13 starts for them at left tackle.
