Saints QB Drew Brees addressed a report that surfaced this pastย weekend from Ian Rapoport that New Orleans was preparing to draft a quarterbackย next year as they prepare for life without Brees.
According to Brees, there is “absolutely no validity” to this report.
“Something like that — I know it has absolutely no validity to it,” Brees said, via Amos Morale of the Times-Picayune. “A lot of time you can look at who’s writing that stuff and you can say ‘alight this guy is trying to make a splash or trying to make a name for himself’ whatever it might be.
“In a lot of cases I’m not sure where they get their information, if they just completely make it up or if there are sources that are their cousins.”
Rapoportย mentionedย there are concerns about Brees’ age and the fact that his armย strength appears to have waned this year.
Even so,ย Brees has thrown for 3,748ย yards while completing 70.3 percent of his passes to go along with 27ย touchdowns and 11 interceptions over the course of 12 games this season.
Brees, 35, is in the third year of his five-year, $100 million contractย that includedย $40 million guaranteed. He has base salaries ofย $18.75 million and $19.75 million coming his way over the next two years.
Brees has put himself in the discussion to be a first-ballot Hall of Fame selection and isย still playing at a well above average level. While there is a chance the Saints could consider drafting a quarterback next year, it’s doubtful that they would be looking to make a change at any point in the near future.

I doubt any Saints fan bought the validity of this “egg-head” Ian Rapoport’s “Sunday Splash” report. Should they look into an heir replacement? Absolutely. Even Brees would agree. Is the urgency such that it requires a QB from the 2015 draft? No. I think Brees is still very effective. Improving the offensive line should be a priority, along with improving the defense (particularly at the safety position). Brees will retire when it’s time. Now ” ain’t that time.” WHO DAT!
Although I definitely agree with you, what would it hurt to draft a good qb this year? Breese has 2 years left. Chances are he is back for probably another 2 years. Why not let one of the greatest qbs of this era mold a young guy. That way they would have a completely capable qb when breese is done?
I think Brees has more than 2 years, but anything can change in a heart beat. I’m not saying it’s wrong to draft a QB, but there shouldn’t be an urgency. They don’t need to waste a 1st, 2nd or 3rd rounder on one. Just my opinion though.
