Ian Rapoport of NFL Media tossed out the Falcons, Buccaneers and Seahawks as potential landing spots for free agent RB Todd Gurley. A source close to Gurley tells Rapoport that he wants to prove he still has it after the Rams opted to release him on Thursday.
- Adam Schefter reports that the Dolphins and Falcons showed the most trade interest in Gurley before he was released.
- Earlier in the day, Josina Anderson reported the Dolphins and Falcons are among Gurley’s most desirable destinations.
Of the two, the Falcons make the most sense, considering that they could use a new running back after releasing Devonta Freeman last week and Gurley played at the University of Georgia.
The Buccaneers and Seahawks have also been linked to free agent running backs this offseason, but the market overall for the position has not been great.
The Rams managed Gurley’s workload quite a bit last year due to knee issues, so there could be some concerns about his knee. In fact, teams will likely want him to take a physical before any deal is completed, which could stand in the way of him signing considering that
It’s worth mentioning that signing Gurley to a contract won’t impact a team’s 2021 compensatory picks, given that he was released this offseason.
Gurley, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Rams back in 2015. He was entering the final year of his four-year, $13.823 million contract and stood to make a base salary of $2.31 million for the 2018 season when the Rams picked up his fifth-year option.
Gurley later agreed to a new four-year extension worth $60 million and includes $45 million guaranteed with the Rams a few months later before being released on Thursday.
In 2019, Gurley appeared in 15 games for the Rams and rushed for 857 yards on 223 carries (3.8 YPC) to go along with 31 receptions for 207 yards receiving and 14 total touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 36 running back out of 58 qualifying players.
We have him included in our Top 100 Available 2020 Free Agents list.
