According to Ian Rapoport, the Washington Football Team plans to hire a general manager following the 2020 season, filling a position that’s been vacant since the end of last year.
Former Panthers GM Marty Hurney will be one of the top candidates for the job, per Rapoport, which will reunite him with HC Ron Rivera.
Other strong candidates include former Texans GM Rick Smith, who was linked to the job following the end of last season, and 49ers VP of player personnel Martin Mayhew.
Hurney is widely seen as the top option given his long history with Rivera in Carolina. But Jason La Canfora adds Hurney has strong support from others in Washington, with former HC Joe Gibbs, who gave Hurney his start in the NFL as a scout for Washington in the 80s, recommending him to owner Daniel Snyder.
There are also strong connections between Washington and Mayhew, who won a Super Bowl with the team playing for Gibbs. La Canfora says it’s possible both Hurney and Mayhew join the organization in 2021. Both could also draw interest from other teams with GM vacancies.
While Washington VP of player personnel Kyle Smith has been assisting Rivera and filling a lot of the general manager roles, Rapoport mentions the team wants to get a more experienced executive in the position.
Hurney, 63, joined the Panthers in 1998 as the director of football administration. He was promoted to general manager in 2002 and held that title until being fired in 2012. He returned on an interim basis in 2017 and was named the general manager again shortly after.
During his 14 years as the GM of the Panthers, Hurney’s teams have produced a record of 106-132 (44.5 percent), which including four playoff appearances and one trip to the Super Bowl in 2003.
