ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that there’s “guarded optimism” about Colts QB Andrew Luck being available for Week 1, despite the ankle/calf issues he’s dealt over the past few months.
On Wednesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Media explained that Luck’s status for the regular-season opener is “really in question” and there wasn’t much optimism from the Colts right now that he’s going to be ready for Week 1.
The good news, however, is that Colts believe they have a better idea of what’s going on with Luck’s injury and think it’s more of a “cumulative” injury that has built up over time, which would help to explain why it was a calf injury and now more of an ankle issue.
Colts HC Frank Reich said Wednesday that he would like to make a call about their starting quarterback next week after the third preseason game.
Garafolo added that unless Luck makes a “miraculous recovery”, Indianapolis could be preparing to go with Jacoby Brissett as their starter.
Luck will at least miss the entire preseason while recovering from this injury.
Luck, 29, is a former first-round pick of the Colts back in 2012 out of Stanford. He finished the third year of his six-year, $139.125 million contract that included $87 million guaranteed and is now set to make base salaries of $9.125 million, $11 million, and $11 million over the final three years of his deal.
In 2018, Luck appeared in all 16 games for the Colts and threw for 4,593 yards, completed 67.3 percent of his passes, 39 touchdowns and 15 interceptions to go along with 46 rushing attempts, 148 yards (3.2 YPC) and no touchdowns. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 3 overall quarterback out of 38 qualifying players.
