Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston writes that “all eyes are on the tight end spot” for the Patriots now that NFL teams can begin to sign free agents without it affecting their 2015 compensatory draft picks.
Reiss specifically mentions that Dustin Keller and Jermichael Finley could both be on the team’s radar, depending on their health.
Finley is coming off of a spinal fusion surgery, but his agent, Blake Baratz, told Pro Football Talk on Thursday of last week that his client has received full medical clearance.
Baratz added that Finley was set to visit a “mystery” team on Friday, but we have yet to hear anything regarding the team. Reiss hasn’t been able to confirm if it was with the Patriots.
Keller actually visited with the Patriots a few weeks ago, but he ultimately left without a contract from the Patriots.
As things stand right now, New England has Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui, D.J. Williams and Justin Jones as their top-four tight ends, so it would make plenty of sense for them to bring in some extra competition ahead of training camp.
