Jets OLB Calvin Pace, ILB Bart Scott, OT Jason Smith, and S Eric Smith are all expected to be released once the waiver period is open in February, according to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com.
By releasing Pace ($8.56 million), Scott ($7.15 million), J. Smith ($12 million), and E. Smith ($3 million), the Jets will clear $30.7 million off their salary cap. These moves will result in $4.5 million in dead money.
If these players are to all be released then the Jets are faced with a big issue. They would then only have 10 starters under contract with limited cap space. Considering that, these moves would suggest that next season will be a rebuilding year for the Jets — using the draft to fill out their roster.
