Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that an NFL source has informed him that Eagles QB Michael Vick is not willing to renegotiate his contract to remain with the team beyond the 2012 season.
It’s widely expected that the Eagles will cut Vick loose in the coming weeks, but there’s still a chance that they could approach him about possibly restructuring his current deal that will pay him $15.5 million in base salary next season. Philadelphia can avoid paying this if they were to release Vick prior to Feb. 6, which would also save them from paying him $3 million guaranteed.
The Eagles could look to keep Vick around as a possible replacement for Nick Foles in case he fails to produce next season or possibly look to trade him in the hopes of securing some draft picks.
Still, Sunday’s game figures to be Vick’s last game as an Eagles, so it seems likely that they will have to decide whether or not they’re going to give Foles a legitimate shot to prove that he can be their guy in the years to come.
