Giants GM Dave Gettleman made it clear that they won’t make any critical decisions regarding their draft plans following the Scouting Combine.

โ€œAbsolutely not,โ€ Gettleman told Tom Rock ofย Newsday. โ€œThere is a whole lot moreย information to gather. Iโ€™ve heard stories about teams setting their boards in February and thatโ€™s where they sit. Thatโ€™s not my philosophy. I want all the information so I can make an informed decision. I donโ€™t have any preconceived notions, I just let the process play out. You have to respect the process, and the process doesnโ€™t end until youโ€™ve done Indy, gone out to the Pro Days, had visits with kids both here and at their campuses, and then we gather up all the information. Iโ€™m a firm believer in respecting the process. You take short cuts, youโ€™re going to make mistakes. I canโ€™t sit here in early March and decide who Iโ€™m taking with the second pick in the draft. Itโ€™s silly.โ€

Gettleman explained that he views free agency as a way to set up their draft plans.

โ€œThe purpose of free agency is to set yourself up for the draft,โ€ Gettleman said. โ€œYou do the UFA signings and then you see where your roster is, and then you move forward. In the ideal world you donโ€™t have to go into the draft with a forced need. You donโ€™t want to be in a position where you have to take a โ€˜fill in the blank.โ€™ You can go in where you can legitimately take the best player available at each pick.โ€
