NFC Notes: Cowboys, Eagles, Giants

Cowboys

  • The Athletic’s Jon Machota says given the expected drop in the salary cap, there’s a good chance the Cowboys roll with the cheaper Garrett Gilbert at backup quarterback next year and allow Andy Dalton to leave in free agency.
  • Machota doesn’t foresee a lot of change at the skill positions for Dallas. While both starting tackles Tyron Smith and La’el Collins are projected to make a healthy return next year, the Cowboys could use their top pick on Oregon OT Penei Sewell to be safe, which would probably impact one of those two players.
  • Machota notes that while the Cowboys would like to re-sign OLB Aldon Smith, their cap situation could make that difficult. Dallas does have Randy Gregory as a potential starter in 2021.
  • Machota expects the Cowboys to move on from LB Sean Lee, who’s an unrestricted free agent this offseason. As for LB Jaylon Smith, Machota writes it’s a possibility Dallas could move on but they’d have to eat a good amount of dead money.
  • The Cowboys have such a big need in the secondary that Machota can see them using their first two picks in that area. In addition to needing upgrades, Dallas is set to lose three starters in CB Chidobe Awuzie, S Xavier Woods and CB Jourdan Lewis.
  • Cowboys’ HC Mike McCarthy said Awuzie“looks great” and anticipates him being ready to go as he returns from a pesky hamstring injury suffered in Week 2. As for DL Tyrone Crawford, McCarthy noted that he has not been cleared to return from the COVID-19 list. (Michael Gehlken)
  • McCarthy said that Dalton was a full participant in Monday’s practice, paving the way for him to return in Week 11. (Gehlken)
  • McCarthy added that Dalton “looked good today” but they plan to take things “one day at a time.” Gehlken says Dalton is “fully expected” to start on Sunday against the Vikings.

Eagles

  • Over The Cap’s Nick Korte goes over the changes to the compensatory pick formula and how the projected picks have played out in 2020. He notes the Eagles could now potentially get a sixth-round comp pick for CB Ronald Darby, who signed with Washington, as long as it falls under the 32-pick cutoff.
  • Eagles promoted CB Michael Jacquet to their active roster. (NFLTR)
  • Eagles signed RB Adrian Killins back to their practice squad.
