NFL Notes: Cowboys, Rams, Steelers & Texans

Cowboys

Though RB Darren McFadden is still considered โ€œday-to-dayโ€ with a hamstring injury, Cowboysโ€™ executive Stephen Jones said that McFadden could be attending practice, but the team prefers to keep a cautious standpoint with his recovery.

โ€œWe want to make sure that heโ€™s 110 percent,โ€ said Jones, via Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. โ€œI think thatโ€™s been a little bit of his problem in the past. He wants to be out here and then comes out here 90 percent and then it doesnโ€™t work out well. We want to make sure heโ€™s 110 percent. He could very easily be out here right now, but we decided to not do it that way.โ€

Rams

  • According to Nick Wagoner of ESPN, CB Janoris Jenkins, CB Marcus Roberson and S Rodney McLeod have all had strong training camps up to this point.
  • Wagoner has also been impressed with WR Brian Quick, who is coming off of a serious shoulder injury.
  • Wagoner mentions that no one has separated themselves in regards to the Ramsโ€™ center job.
  • Third-round pick Jamon Brown has been able to adjust to the speed of his opponents much faster than second-round pick Rob Havenstein.

Steelers

Backup QB Landry Jones will get a majority of snaps for the Steelersโ€™ first preseason game, and could play the entire game.

โ€œHe has had his moments before, but none more definitive than this in this part of his career,โ€ said QB coach Randy Fichtner, via Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. โ€œHe is getting a whole lot of work with (first string), the (second string) and now is the time to let this all come together.โ€

Kaboly mentions that the Steelers are trying to determine if Jones could be Ben Roethlisbergerโ€˜s long-term backup.

โ€œHis performance has been on a steady incline out there, but that is out there,โ€ HC Mike Tomlin said. โ€œWe prepare and play out there for what transpires in stadiums, and I am excited to watch him play.โ€

Texans

  • John McClain reports that the Texans will look to sign another running back to add to the depth chart.

HC Bill Oโ€™Brien said that he views RB Chris Polk as a โ€œthree-downโ€ running back.

โ€œI see him as a three-down back. He needs to be out there every day. Heโ€™s working hard to stay healthy,โ€ said Oโ€™Brien, via Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun.
