Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks could not have been anymore deflating for the New Orleans Saints and their fan base given the general expectations of the games outcome. Now that New Orleans season as come to an end, the team can start preparing for the offseason and their potential 28 unrestricted free agents.
James Varney of theย New Orleans Times-Picayune discusses some the potential roster changes that could be in store for the New Orleans Saints come this offseason.
Here’s a look at some of the notable free agents that the Saints will have to mull over during the offseason.
Reggie Bush
Bush has one year remaining on his deal that will pay him a staggering $11.8 million next season. Considering that his production dropped off this season, mainly due to an injury suffered early into the season, the Saints are likely to approach him about restructuring his deal. This could help them offer Drew Bree’s an extension since he’ll be a free agent after the 2011 season. Bush has already explained his desire to remain in New Orleans.
“Like I’ve said for a long time: I want to be here, this is where I want to be,” he said. “I love the organization here, the city, the fans and hopefully they’ll keep me here.”
Pierre Thomas
Is set to become a free agent but with the rise of Chris Ivory, he may be deemed expendable by Sean Payton and company. Thomas has been the most consist back for the Saints when healthy but the team will have plenty of holes to fill come next year.
Jeremey Shockey
Has a year remaining on his contract that will cost the Saints $4.5 million which is really high for the amount of production that they have gotten out him. The rise of Jimmy Graham will likely impact their decision but it’s worth noting that David Thomas will also be a free agent so they will have to figure out what tandem they will want to go with next year.
Other Notable Players:
WR Lance Moore, TE David Thomas, OT Zach Strief, DE Anthony Hargrove, LB Scott Shanle, and OT Jermon Bushrod.
