Adam Schefter reports that the Packers are expected to request an interview with Northwestern HC Pat Fitzgerald for their head-coaching job after the Wildcats bowl game on Monday.
A source tells Schefter that it’s unclear whether Fitzgerald would interview for the Packers’ job, but he has obvious ties to president Mark Murphy, who hired him as Northwestern’s head coach.
There has been a lot of buzz about the Packers and Fitzgerald the past few weeks, so it’s not surprising to hear that Green Bay is planning to request an interview.
It remains to be seen whetherย Fitzgerald will be willing to leave Northwestern, but his ties to members of the Packers could be enough for him to seriously entertain the idea.
As of now, the Packers have interviewed Jim Caldwell and Chuck Pagano for their head-coaching vacancy, but you can expect more names to surface in the coming days.
Fitzgerald, 44, was hired as a defensive backs coach for Northwestern back in 2001 and he eventually worked his way up to head coach in 2006. During his 13 years as the Wildcats’ head coach, Fitzgerald has led the team to a record of 95-70 (57.6 percent), which includes eight bowl game appearances.
We’ll have more regarding the Packers and Fitzgerald as the news is available.
