Panthers QB Cam Newton Out Indefinitely With Lisfranc Injury

Joe Person of The Athletic, citing multiple sources, reports that Panthers QB Cam Newton is out indefinitely with a Lisfranc injury.

Person says surgery is “not in the plan at this time”, which would likely cost him the remainder of the season.

Sports medicine experts tell Person that the recovery period Lisfranc injuries that don’t require surgery range between four to eight weeks, depending on the severity.

The Panthers initially referred to Newton’s injury a mid-foot sprain. However, Person mentions that there appears to be some confusion over Newton’s injury or even disagreement between the team and Newton’s camp as to the severity of it.

On Monday, Panthers HC Ron Rivera announced that they’re starting Kyle Allen in Week 4 and plan to give Newton the time he needs to get healthy.

“What Cam needs right now is time and rest for his foot,” Rivera said. “We want him at 100 percent when he’s ready, so there’s no exact timetable for his return.”

Newton, 30, is a former first-round pick of the Panthers back in 2011. He entering the fifth year of his six-year, $118.47 million contract that includes $60 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $16.2 million and $18.6 million over the final two years of the agreement.

In 2019, Newton has appeared in two games for the Panthers, completing 50 out of 89 passes for 572 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. He has also rushed five times for -2 yards.
