Panthers Rule Out QB Cam Newton For Week 4

The Carolina Panthers announced Monday that they’ve already ruled out QB Cam Newton (foot) for Sunday’s game at Houston.

“What Cam needs right now is time and rest for his foot. We want him at 100 percent when he’s ready, so there’s no exact timetable for his return,” head coach Ron Rivera said. “At this point, we’re going to go forward with Kyle (Allen) as our starter.

The Panthers and Newton had gotten off to a slow start to the season before Kyle Allen led them to a win over the Cardinals on Sunday.

It makes sense that Carolina would buy Newton the time he needs to get back to 100 percent before having him return as the team’s starter, especially after the solid performance from Allen.

Newton, 30, is a former first-round pick of the Panthers back in 2011. He entering the fifth year of his six-year, $118.47 million contract that includes $60 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $16.2 million and $18.6 million over the final two years of the agreement.

In 2019, Newton has appeared in two games for the Panthers, completing 50 out of 89 passes for 572 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. He has also rushed five times for -2 yards.
