Mike Garafolo of NFL Media is reporting that theย Patriots and WR Julian Edelman are moving toward an agreement on a contract extension that should be completed “in the next day or so.”
Edelman has not only been a major contributor for the Patriots but has also been among the most underpaid players in the NFL.
A few years ago,ย Edelman tested the open market but found less interest than expected, which led to him returning to the Patriots on a team-friendly contract. It will be interesting to see how much money his next will pay him in terms of annual salary and total guarantees.
Edelman, 31, is a former seventh-round pick of the Patriots back in 2009. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $17 million contract that included $8 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $3 million for the 2017 season.
In 2016, Edelman appeared in all 16 games for the Patriots and caught 98 passes for 1,106 yards receiving and three touchdowns. He also added 57 rushing yards, 44 kick return yards and 135 punt return yards for New England.ย Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 21 receiver out of 115 qualifying players.
