Redskins Officially Place C Kory Lichtensteiger On Reserve/Retired List

The Washington Redskins officially placed veteran C Kory Lichtensteiger on the reserve/retired list Monday.

This is just a procedural move for Washington after he announced his retirement from the NFL last week. By placing Lichtensteiger on the reserve/retired list, the Redskins will hold his rights in the event he elects to unretire and return to the NFL at some point.

Here’s the statement released by Lichtensteiger last week announcing his retirement:

After much thought and consideration, I have decided to retire from the National Football League,” Lichtensteiger said. “I am grateful beyond words to the Washington Redskins organization. I would like to thank the ownership as a whole and specifically Dan Snyder and his family for the opportunity to play the bulk of my career here in Washington.”

Added head coach Jay Gruden: “We want to congratulate Kory on a very successful careerr. Kory has been a class act both on and off the field and worked tirelessly on becoming the best player he could possibly be. Kory defied the odds of being undersized because of his competitive spirit, accountability and attention to detail. It also helps to be tough as hell. We want to thank Kory for his relentless effort and leadership and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Lichtensteiger, 31, is a former fourth-round pick of the Broncos back in 2008. He lasted just over a year in Denver before he was waived and later claimed by the Redskins.

Lichtensteiger was entering the final year of his five-year, $17.5 million contract and set to make a base salary of $3.25 million for the 2017 season.

The Redskins placed him on injured reserve a few weeks into the regular season before designating him to return in December.

In 2016, Lichtensteiger has appeared in three games for the Redskins.
