NFC Notes: Lane Johnson Retirement, Tyler Smith, Commanders, Cowboys, Eagles

Commanders

  • Commanders LT Brandon Coleman kept it blunt when talking about the team’s penalties: “We say the same thing every week: ‘we’ve got to fix it’. But it’s just bullshit. It’s stuff we know we’ve got to do and stuff we’ve got to fix up. I hate to say it, you always say that shit. We’ve got to fix it yesterday. But at the end of the day it’s on us.” (John Keim)

Cowboys

  • Cowboys G Tyler Smith said the UCL in his thumb got worse as camp went on, especially after a joint session with the Saints: “I tried to practice, tried to see what I could do, and ultimately I ended up making it a little bit worse. And so ultimately we have to end up getting surgery. I mean, it’s unfortunate, but it’s nobody’s fault. I mean, it’s what happens when you play football at a high level. So it’s just one of those things.” (Calvin Watkins)

Eagles

Eagles RT Lane Johnson unexpectedly missed Week 4 for personal reasons that HC Nick Sirianni wouldn’t disclose. Johnson then announced his retirement on Tuesday.

“I think you guys know he’s dealing with a personal matter and that’s really all I’m gonna say about that,” Sirianni said Monday, via Pro Football Talk.

  • Sirianni was asked about using shotgun and under-center on offense: “There are still some identity questions that we need to answer.” (Brooks Kubena)
  • Sirianni isn’t worried about C Cam Jurgens‘ level of play through Week 4: “I’m pleased with where Cam is… There’s going to be plays he wants back, and there’s good moments also.” (Zach Berman)
  • Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Eagles DE Jonathan Greenard is considered day-to-day after suffering an ankle injury in Week 4.
