Jordan Raanan of NJ.com reports that the Giants haveย still haven’t talked to free agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul regarding a long-termย contract extension.
Raanan wonders if this could be an indication that the Giants may use their franchise tag onย Pierre-Paul in the coming weeks.
Steve Serby of the New York Postย previously reported that the Giants are in the process of negotiating to keep Pierre-Paul in place with theย non-exclusive franchise tag.
โThey will negotiate to tag him,โ a league source familiar with the Giantsโ thinking tells Serby.
However,ย Raanan reported that Pierre-Paul and his representatives have yet to be informed of the team’s intentions to use theย non-exclusive franchise tag on him.
Doing so would force another team to part with twoย first-round picks in order sign Pierre-Paul away from the Giants.
According to Serby, the Giants would prefer that this deal pay Pierre-Paul in the $11 million-to-$12 million range, rather thanย $14.6 million for the 2015 season.
New York would have more time to work out a long-term extension with the defensive end, butย Raananย reported a few days ago that the two sidesย haven’t exchanged figures regarding a new contract.
Pierre-Paul, 25, played out hisย five-year, $20.05 million rookie contractย that includedย $11,629,807 million guaranteed.
This season, Pierre-Paul recorded 77ย tackles, 12.5ย sacks, threeย forced fumbles and a recovery over the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 7 defensive end in a 4-3 system out of 59 qualifying players.
We have him rated as the No. 8ย player in our Top 100ย Free Agents list.
