Manish Mehta of Theย New York Daily News reports that the Jets are “eyeing” Bears free agent QB Josh McCown.
- Mehta adds that the Jets viewย McCown as a “viable alternative” to Geno Smith is case he regresses in his second year in the NFL.
- Mehta believesย McCown should be able to find “serious interest” from a handful of teamsย on the open the market this year, but the Jets think he would be a quality backup quarterback for them.
- Shifting gears a bit,ย Mehta also reports thatย Michael Vick is “unlikely” to be an option for them, even though some have connected the dots between Vick and formerย Eaglesย offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg who is now with the Jets.
- Mehta’sย sources added thatย Texans QB Matt Schaub wouldn’t be interested in being Smith’s backup next season.
The Jets are still expected to part way with Mark Sanchez in the coming weeks as he has aย $2 million roster bonus due in late March.
Last year,ย McCown basicallyย resurrected his career afterย Jay Cutlerย went down with an injury. He completed 66.5 percent of his passes forย 1,829ย yards to go along with 13 touchdowns and just a single interception.
It will be interesting to see what kind of market he has in the coming months.
We have both McCown and Vick listed in ourย Top 50 Free Agents list.

Many teams will have interest in McCowan. Raiders have said so as well. The Bears have a two month exclusive on him and am sure they are working hard to re-sign him. He has a perfect situation with the Bears and it is hard to see him anywhere else. http://beardownnation.blogspot.ca/
