Manish Mehta of theย New York Daily Newsย reports that the Jets are likely to part ways withย LBย Bart Scott, LBย Calvin Paceย and OTย Jason Smithย at some point in the near future.
Mehta adds that these moves would createย $27.7 million in cap space for the Jets.
There’s been plenty made about the Jets current financial predicament, butย if they can save that much money by releasing these players, then it really seems like a no-brainer.
Scott, 32, is no longer an impact player and has beenย relegated to playing a limited role in obvious rushing situations in recent years.
Pace’s cap figure could have beenย $11 million next season, which is staggering when you consider that Pro Football Focus has him rated as the worst pass-rushing 3-4 OLB last season.
Smith is a former draft bust that is no better than a replacement level player, although he’s still only 26.
Mehta also tweets that the Jets will most likely useย David Harris andย DeMario Davis as their starting inside linebackers next season.
