Katherine Terrell of ESPN reports that the Saints TE Ben Watson will not suit up for the NFC Championship game this weekend after missing two practices due to appendicitis.
Ian Rapoport confirms the news and adds that Watson has been in the hospital, but they’re hoping he can avoid surgery.
If that proves to be the case, Rapoport says that Watson should be ready for the Super Bowl if the team advances this weekend.
The Saints will turn to Josh Hill, Garrett Griffin and Dan Arnold at tight end while Watson is out.
Watson previously announced that this will be his final season in the NFL.
Watson, 38, is a former first-round pick of the Patriots back in 2004. He spent six years in New England before joining the Browns in 2010.
Watson signed on with the Saints for the 2013 season and spent three years in New Orleans before joining the Ravens on a two-year, $7 million contract in 2016.
The Saints brought Watson back this past March on a one-year contract.
In 2018, Watson has appeared in 16 games for the Saints and caught 35 passes for 400 yards receiving and two touchdowns.
