John Harris of theย Pittsburgh Tribune-Reviewย writes that the Steelers will have to whether to restructureย OLB James Harrison‘s contract or ask him toย take a pay cut.
Harrison, 34,ย is set to make $6.57 million for the 2013 season and another $7.57 million in 2014. He underwent knee surgery last year and wasย noticeably different upon returning to the team.ย Harrison is reportedly willing toย restructure his contract, but is not willing to take a pay cut.
This could force the Steelers to part ways with Harrison, despite not having an obvious replacement for him on their current roster. Harris writes thatย Pittsburgh has madeย similarย moves in the past when they released Alan Faneca and Joey Porter.
The Steelers are still in a financial predicament that could ultimately cost them Mike Wallace. Last year, they finished 8-8, so it’s not as though they were on the brink of another Super Bowl title, so the right move could be to cut Harrison loose and look to get both younger and cheaper across the board.
