Steelers LB Ryan Shazier Discharged From Hospital

On Thursday, Steelers LB Ryan Shazier announced via his Instagram account that he’s officially been released from the hospital after two months of treatment.

Iโ€™ve had a lot of 1st downs at UPMC, but you know being the defensive guy I am, my mind is on 3 and out. With that being said, I want everyone to know that Iโ€™m moving on to the next step of the process. Todayโ€™s a big day for me as Iโ€™m officially being released from the hospital. I want to take a moment to thank the people who have helped me the past two months. First and foremost, I want to thank God because at the end of the day I donโ€™t think Iโ€™d be making progress without His vision and hands protecting me and my family. I will continue to trust in Him and thank Him, because it all starts with Him. To my family: youโ€™ve been my rock. Words canโ€™t express how thankful I am for you Michelle, RJ, Mom, Dad, and VJ for always being there for me. Youโ€™re my everything. To Jerome: my trainer and best friend. Thank you for being there from day 1 and every day after continuing to push me to be better every day. Iโ€™d like to thank Dr. Okonkwo, Dr. Harrington, Dr. Maroon, and Dr. Schroeder for their amazing work on my procedure and continuous care. I canโ€™t appropriately express how grateful I am for how quickly youโ€™ve helped me bounce back. I want to thank the medical staff at UPMC for their amazing care, support and therapy they have given me- especially Joe, Nikki, Karolina and Dani. I know the staff will continue to help me find a way to keep on pushing as we continue therapy. The support from my teammates has been truly amazing. From former players to current players and their families- they have helped me and my family day to day with visits and gifts. We canโ€™t thank you enough. I want to thank Mr. Rooney, Coach T, Mr. Colbert, and the entire Steelers organization for the unwavering support theyโ€™ve given me. I knew they were an amazing organization, but more than ever theyโ€™re family to me. Lastly, I want to thank Jimmy, Candice, and the CAA Sports staff for being here when I need them most. I donโ€™t know if Iโ€™d be where Iโ€™m at or making the progress Iโ€™m making without you guys. I want everyone to know that all of the support and prayers are absolutely being answered. I will continue to work hard and push and find a way back. #Shalieve #Steelers #prayfor50

UPMC released the following statement Thursday regarding Shazier:

Ryan Shazier was discharged from the UPMC Rehabilitation Institue at UPMC Mercy today and will transition into an outpatient therapy program through the UPMC Centers for Rehab Services.”

Last we heard regarding Shazier, his father,ย Vernon, toldย ย WPXIย that his son has feeling in his legs and is “making progress daily.”

โ€œHeโ€™s making progress daily,โ€ Vernon Shazier said, via PennLive.com. โ€œHeโ€™s a long ways from where he was Monday night when he was laying on the field.โ€

When asked if his son could play football again, Vernon said yes while adding:ย “I Shalieve. I Shalieve.

During their game against the Bengals, Shazier lowered his head to make a tackle on Bengalsย WR Josh Malone when his head made contact withย Malone’s thigh. Shazer dropped to the turf and it was clear that his lower extremities weren’t functioning after the hit.

The Steelers medical staff loaded him on to a backboard and carted him off of the field before immediately taking him to a local hospital.

Shazier, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Steelers back in 2014. He was in theย final year of his four-year, $9.5 million contract and set to make a base salary of $1,284,292 for the 2016 season when the Steelers picked up his fifth-year option this past May.

Shazier will earn an $8.718 million salary for the 2017 season, which is guaranteed for injury only.

In 2017, Shazier has appeared in 11 games and recorded 87 tackles, three interceptions, a fumble recovery, two forced fumbles and 10 pass defenses.ย Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 8 inside linebacker out of 87 qualifying players.

We wish Shazier the best moving forward as he works his way back from this serious injury.
