Eagles View Re-Signing DT Fletcher Cox As A “Huge Priority”

Eagles VP of football operations Howie Roseman said Wednesday that re-signing DE Fletcher Cox is a “huge priority” for them.

“Our intention for Fletcher is to always be an Eagle. We’ve made that known to him,” Roseman said, per CSNPhilly.com. “Sometimes these things don’t happen so quickly. We’ve been very fortunate to get five contracts done. But history says that’s probably the exception, not the norm.”

Roseman also made it clear that they plan to offer him a big contract.

“For us, he’s a great player, so he’s going to get great player money,” Roseman said. “We’re not shy about saying that. It comes down to kind of structure and all the things that kind of complicate negotiations. But I think the intention is right from him and his representative and certainly from us and how we feel about him.”

Philadelphia has been the most aggressive team in addressing their core players this offseason, as they’ve already locked up five players to multi-year extensions.

Cox, 25, played out his four-year, $10.241 million rookie contract last year before the Eagles elected to pick up his fifth-year option. He’ll make a base salary of $7.799 million for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Cox appeared in all 16 games for the Eagles and recorded 71 tackles, 9.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, two recoveries and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2 defensive end in a 3-4 defense out of 57 qualifying players.
