49ers Officially Hire Joe Woods As DBs Coach/Passing Game Coordinator

Update:

The San Francisco 49ers announced Thursday that they’ve officially hired Joe Woods as defensive backs coach/passing game coordinator.

“In addition to being a tremendous coach with a wealth of knowledge, Joe is a great person that we believe will help bring the best out of our players,” Shanahan said. “Since we first worked together in Tampa, Joe has continued to gain invaluable experience in different schemes and coverages that will benefit our defense. Anybody who is familiar with Joe as a coach knows that he is passionate about the fundamentals of the game and we look forward to seeing the impact he has on our team.”

Mike Garafolo reports that the 49ers are hiring former Broncos DC Joe Woods to their staff as their defensive passing game coordinator.

Mike Klis reported earlier today that 49ers were bringing in Woods for an interview on Tuesday, so they were clearly impressed enough to quickly signed him.

Last we heard regarding Woods, Klis said he was deciding between the Cardinals and Redskins for an undisclosed position and was drawing “strong interest” around the league.

Woods, 48, began his NFL coaching career with the Buccaneers back in 2004 as their defensive backs coach. After a few years in Tampa Bay, Woods took the same position with the Vikings where he remained for eight years before catching on with the Raiders in 2014.

The Broncos brought Woods in as their defensive backs before promoting him to defensive coordinator in 2017.

In 2018, the Broncos’ defense ranks No. 22 in total yards allowed, No. 20 in passing yards allowed, No. 21 in rushing yards allowed and No. 13 in points per game.
