New 49ers Head Coach Could Seek Out Raiders DC Jason Tarver

Update:

New 49ers Head Coach Jim Tomsula is likely to consider current Raiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver, according to Ian Rapoport.

  • Rapoport adds that Tomsula will look elsewhere as well, but that he is a fan of Tarver.

Tomsula is going to need a new defensive coordinator now that it appears Vic Fangio will be leave the organization.

Tarver spent several years in the 49ers organization, serving as the offensive quality control coach from 2001-2003, followed by a one-year stint as the assistant running backs coach, and six years coaching the outside linebackers.

Obviously, there is a good deal of familiarity between Tomsula and Tarver.

It remains to be seen if Jack Del Rio will shake up the Raiders staff.

In the wake of the Jim Tomsula promotion, Cam Inman reports that DC Vic Fangio is not expected to remain with the team per a league source.

Jason La Canfora hinted earlier that if Tomsula received the promotion over Fangio, that it would likely spell the end of the latter’s tenure in San Francisco.

It’s not difficult to understand why Fangio would want to move on after being bypassed for the promotion.  The franchise valued both coaches very highly, but it seems the right time to part ways.

Fangio will not remain unemployed long.  La Canfora has already linked him to the Redskins defensive coordinator job.

Fangio has been with the 49ers since 2011, and has had a tremendous amount of success leading the defense.
