Broncos Expected Officially Pick Up Demaryius Thomas’ Option This Week

Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post reports that the Broncos are expected to officially pick up WR Demaryius Thomas‘ $4 million option in the next day or so.

Denver has until Wednesday to officially pick up Thomas’ option, which triggers the final two years of his contract.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, considering that Broncos executive VP John Elway told reporters at the Combine that they planned to bring back Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders.

There were some rumors the Denver may have to move on from one of them in order to create cap space to pursue a quarterback. However, if Denver is going to compete with other teams for quarterbacks, it would certainly help their cause to have quality receiver depth to pitch to free agents.

Thomas, 30, is a former first-round pick of the Broncos back in 2010. He’s entering the fourth year of his five-year, $70 million contract that included $43.5 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $8.5 million and $14 million over the final two years of the agreement.

In 2017, Thomas appeared in all 16 games for the Broncos and caught 83 passes for 949 yards receiving and five touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 46 receiver out of 116 qualifying players.
