Contract Details For Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles’ Two-Year Extension

 

The Kansas City Chiefs have already announced their agreement with Pro Bowl RB Jamaal Charles, but the details regarding the contract are now available.

Charles received a two-year extension from the Chiefs that will keep him under team control through the 2017 season.

  • His contract includes $18 million in new money and $28 million over the next four years, according to Mike Garafolo.
  • Ian Rapoport mentions that the deal will include an additional $5 million over the next two years.

Joel Corry of CBS Sports provides a yearly breakdown Charles contract.

  • 2014: $4.1M base salary, $2.95M roster bonus  (7/26) guaranteed for skill & injury, $1M reporting bonus, and $250k workout bonus.
  • 2015: $4.45M base salary, $1M roster bonus ($62.5k per game), $1M reporting bonus, and $250k workout bonus.
  • 2016: $2.75M base salary, $1M roster bonus ($62.5k per game), $2M reporting bonus, and $250k workout bonus.
  • 2017: $3.75M base salary, $1M roster bonus ($62.5k per game), $2M reporting bonus, and $250k workout bonus.

Corry mentions that 2014 cap figure could end up being either $9,633,333 or $7,420,833 depending on whether or not his roster bonus is treated as signing bonus.

There is no question that Charles had out played his current contract after he played a staggering 87.4 percent of the team’s offensive snaps.

Charles, 27, ran for 1,287 yards on 259 carries (5 YPC) while contributing another 693 yards receiving on 70 receptions and scoring 19 touchdowns for Kansas City last season. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2 running back in the league last year.
