Contract Details For Jim Harbaugh’s Seven-Year, $35M Deal With Michigan

Michigan interim athletic director Jim Hackett announced that Jim Harbaugh signed a seven-year, $35 million contract with the university.

Harbaugh’s deal includes a 10 percent increases after the third and fifth year of his contract and a $2 million signing bonus, according to Michael Steele.

The agreement will also pay him incentive bonuses for Big Ten championships, bowl appearances, coaching awards and team academic performance.

Here’s a look at Harbaugh’s incentives:

  • Big Ten championship appearance: $125,000
  • Big Ten title: $250,000
  • Bowl Game selected by playoff committee: $200,00
  • College Playoff game: $300,000
  • National Championship: $500,000
  • Big Ten Coach of the Year: $50,000
  • Other awards: $75,000
  • Academic Performance of 960 or higher: up to $150,000

Following a review by the athletic director on the progress of the Michigan football program next year, the school plans to “determine an appropriate deferred compensation arrangement.”

Harbaugh told reporters during his introductory interview that he turned down more money from NFL teams to return to Michigan.

I made a decision from the heart which I thought was best for our family,” Harbaugh said, per Mike Garafolo.

The Oakland Raiders were known to be aggressively pursuing Harbaugh and Garafolo reports that they were offering him more money the University of Michigan.
