Deal Between Redskins & DT Johnathan Hankins Considered Unlikely

A league source tells JP Finlay of NBC Washington that he doesn’t see the Redskins working out a deal with free agent DT Johnathan Hankins.

Finlay does, however, say that there’s at least chance a deal could get done at some point, as there was “mutual interest” between the two parties during his visit to Washington.

The Redskins are clearly in the market for a defensive tackle, but it looks like they may prefer to wait and see what happens in the draft before reconsidering free agent options such as Hankins.

It’s worth mentioning that signing Hankins to contract won’t impact a team’s 2019 compensatory picks, given that he was released this offseason.

Hankins, 25, is a former second-round pick of the Giants back in 2013. He played out the final year of his rookie contract last year before signing a three-year, $27 million contract that included $14.5 million guaranteed with the Colts.

Hankins was set to make base salaries of $7.5 million and $8 million over the next two years of the agreement when the Colts released him in a move that cleared $8,468,750 of available cap space.

In 2017, Hankins appeared in 15 games for the Colts and recorded 44 tackles, two sacks, and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 20 interior defensive lineman out of 122 qualifying players.
