Jets HC Todd Bowles announced following Sunday’s loss to the Broncos that QB Josh McCown broke his left hand, per Manish Mehta.

Bryce Petty took over for McCown after he left the game.

McCown left the game earlier with a back injury only to return a play later. Unfortunately, McCown took another hit and went to the locker room for X-rays and never returned to the game.

McCown, 38, is a former third-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2002. He played for several teams including the Lions, Raiders, Dolphins, Panthers, 49ers, Bears, Buccaneers and Browns before signing a one-year, $6 million contract with the Jets as an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Entering today’s game, McCown has appeared in 12 games for the Jets and thrown for 2,880 yards while completing 67.8 percent of his passes to go along with 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 18 quarterback out of 38 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding McCown as the news is available.
