Kareem Hunt Unlikely To Be Claimed Off Waivers Monday

According to Adam Schefter, the prevailing opinion from multiple executives around the league is that Kareem Hunt will not be claimed off of waivers on Monday, which means he’ll become an unrestricted free agent.

“I don’t think anyone claims him,” one general manager tells Schefter.

“No way, I don’t see it,” said an NFL executive.

Other executives told Schefter there’s “no chance” Hunt is claimed and a third GM mentioned that he “can’t imagine” a team claiming Hunt.

Schefter says that there is “widespread skepticism” that his existing contract will be enough to convince any team to put in a claim.

According to Schefter, there’s also a belief amongst NFL front offices that LB Reuben Foster‘s situation impacted Hunt’s. Schefter adds that the sense is that if Foster had not been accused of another act of domestic violence last week, the Chiefs might have been more apt to keep Hunt and another team might be willing to claim him.

Earlier in the day, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, citing sources with direct knowledge of the situation, reports that Hunt is facing more than the baseline six-game suspension for violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

According to Rapoport, the NFL is also investigating an incident involving Hunt allegedly punching a man in the face at an Ohio resort in June and the belief is that the NFL has found enough from that incident to increase Hunt’s suspension.

The NFL placed Hunt on the commissioner’s exempt list before the Chiefs announced his release Friday. Even if Hunt it claimed, he would be ineligible to play until Roger Goodell removes him from the list.

Hunt, 23, is a former third-round pick of the Chiefs back in 2017. He’s currently in the second year of his four-year, $3.263-million contract and set to make base salaries of $555,000 and $645,000 over the next two years of the agreement.

In 2018, Hunt has appeared in 11 games for the Chiefs and rushed for 824 yards on 181 carries (4.6 YPC) to go along with 26 receptions for 378 yards receiving and 14 total touchdowns.
