Latest Regarding Patriots Trying To Trade WR Malcolm Mitchell

According to Ian Rapoport, Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell did, in fact, undergo a procedure on his knee but not surgery. Rapoport explains that the procedure was designed to accelerate the healing process.

Rapoport confirms that the Patriots are attempting to trade Mitchell and it’s clear New England is poised to move on from him and his health issues before the season.

There were some reports from yesterday that Mitchell’s 2018 season could be in jeopardy, but it sounds like that may not be the case.

Mitchell, 25, was taken in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft. He signed a four-year, $2.917 million contract that included a $577,992 signing bonus with the Patriots and stands to make base salaries of $630,000 and $720,000 over the next two years.

The Patriots placed Mitchell on injured reserve at the start of the regular season last year before designating him to return. However, New England declined to activate him from the list, which subsequently ended his 2017 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Mitchell would free up $485,502 of available cap space while creating $288,996 in dead money.

In 2016, Mitchell appeared in 14 games for the Patriots and caught 32 passes for 401 yards receiving and four touchdowns.
