Michael Vick: “Geno’s The Starting Quarterback”

It was assumed that the Jets signed veteran QB Michael Vick with the intention of allowing him to compete for the starting job with last year’s second-round pick Geno Smith.

However, Vick told reporters on Saturday that Smith will be the team’s starting quarterback next year.

“Geno’s the starting quarterback for that football team,” Vick said during a family fitness event, via NJ.com.

Vick added that he and Matt Simms will do everything the can to help Smith improve during his second year in the NFL.

Ultimately our goal is to try to help Geno become the best quarterback that he can be,” said Vick. “Myself and [third-stringer Matt Simms] are all trying to put him in a position where he can get better from year one to year two.

This is certainly interesting news given that Vick maintained all along that he at least wanted the opportunity to compete for the starting job in 2014.

The Jets signed him to a one-year contract worth $4 million that includes a $1 million signing bonus and another $1 million that’s available through incentives.

Vick is still expected to receive some reps during training camp and there’s still a chance that he could eventually take over as the team’s starter, but for now it looks like Smith will be given the opportunity to secure the job out of the gate.
