NFL Draft Notes: Justin Herbert, Dwayne Haskins, Kyler Murray

Justin Herbert

  • Despite reports that Oregon QB Justin Herbert could be leaning towards returning to school next year, Gil Brandt says he would “make a rather heavy wager” Herbert declares for the 2019 NFL draft.
  • Brandt adds that he would also wager that Herbert will be a top-5 pick when all is said and done.

Dwayne Haskins

  • Gil Brandt is hearing that Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins is “heavily leaning” toward entering the 2019 NFL Draft.
  • Bradt says that Haskins is considered to be a “very hot name” in scouting circles and is “moving up quickly.”

Kyler Murray

Over the weekend, Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray’s baseball agent, Scott Boras, told Ian Rapoport that he won’t pursue an NFL career.

“Kyler has agreed and the A’s agreed to a baseball contract that gave him permission to play college football through the end of the collegiate season,” Boras said. “After that, he is under contract to play baseball. That is not a determination to make. It’s already done.”

However, Gil Brandt says he isn’t convinced that Murray’s pro football dreams are over no matter what his agent says.

  1. Dwayne Haskins is a real good college QB nothing more. Haskins comes from a long list of OSU QBs that will not make it in the NFL. There was Troy Smith, Terelle Pryor, Braxton Miller, Cardale Jones, JT Barrett, etc. And now there is the Haskins debate. Add into the equation. With the exception of Alex Smith, Urban Meyer coached QBs never have a career in the NFL. Tim Tebow could have had a career if he had a more pro style coach in college, a David Cutcliffe, Lincoln Riley or Steve Spurrier come to mind. Just like ‘Bama, same theory. The last ‘Bama QB to make it in the NFL was Joe Namath. Haskins should return to OSU for another year.
As for Kyler Murray, he should stick with baseball. Ironic! How the Media hypes this kid as a first to third rounder. Yet! When Mayfield came out last year, there was all this nonsense that Mayfield was too short amongst other critiques. Well! Mayfield is 6’0″ and Murray is lucky if he is 5’10” with cleats. Murray is a good runner, quicker then Mayfield. But! Mayfield is the far superior passer. Murray might make it as a punt returner/slot receiver/3rd down option, nothing more.
Last but not least Justin Herbert. He has everything you want for today’s NFL QB position. Height, arm strength, mobility in the pocket and running ability. Herbert needs another year of “polish”. Learning to be more consistent at the QB position.
