NFL Notes: Draft, 49ers, Browns, Buccaneers, Eagles

Draft

  • Rand Getlin reports that Michigan State DE Shilique Calhoun is “strongly considering” entering the 2015 NFL Draft.
  • South Carolina RB Mike Davis confirmed that he’ll be leaving for the NFL. (Josh Kendall)
  • Rand Getlin, citing multiple sources, reports that Miami RB Duke Johnson is expected to announce he’s entering the 2015 NFL Draft.

49ers

Impending free agent WR Michael Crabtree he can’t wait to see what the next chapter of his career will be.

“I can’t wait to see what’s next, the next chapter in my career,” Crabtree said, via Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area. “I’m going to go hard every day. I’m going to go hard every year, try to get better. Try to maximize my talent.”

However, Crabtree didn’t want to discuss whether or not he’ll be back with the 49ers next year.

It depends. I don’t even want to talk about it,” Crabtree said. “It’s one of those things. It’s got to happen.

Browns

  • HC Mike Pettine told reporters that rookie QB Johnny Manziel will still have a “chance to compete” for the quarterback job next year.

“He’s a player on our roster,” Pettine said, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. “He’ll have the chance to compete.

  • Multiple Browns’ players have been critical of first-round pick CB Justin Gilbert in recent weeks.

Donte Whitner said of Gilbert: “it’s time to grow up and not be a kid anymore. 

“It’s time to grow up and not be a kid anymore. It’s a wasted year for him,” Whitner said, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. “There were so many ups, so many downs — a lot of it has been brought on by himself.”

Buccaneers

  • Impending free agent ILB Mason Foster said he wants to be back with the Buccaneers next year.

“I definitely want to stay in Tampa,’’ Foster said Wednesday, via Pat Yaskinskas of ESPN. “Both my sons were born in Tampa. I’ve got a lot of ties down here, and I love Tampa. It would be great. It would be amazing to stay here. But football is a business so you know there’s a chance you won’t be here.’’

Eagles

  • HC Chip Kelly said that he believes QB Matt Barkley has a future with the Eagles, even though they decided to give Mark Sanchez the start in their Week 17 game. (Zach Berman)
  • Zach Berman points out that this game would have been a great time to see of Barkley really has a future with the team.
