Raiders S Obi Melifonwu Clears Waivers, Reverts To Injured Reserve

Raiders S Obi Melifonwu officially passed through waivers unclaimed on Friday and reverted to the team’s injured reserve list, according to Mike Garafolo.

Ian Rapoport adds that Melifonwu is currently weighing his options now on how to proceed and he feels he can still play this year.

It’s likely that the Raiders will work out an injury settlement with Melifonwu at some point and release him from injured reserve.

Melifonwu, 24, was selected by the Raiders with the No. 56 overall pick. He’s in the second year of his four-year, $4.5 million contract and set to make base salaries of $669,972 and $824,944 over the next two years.

The Raiders placed Melifonwu on injured reserve coming out of the preseason last year while he was working his way back from knee surgery and later brought him back. However, he returned to the injured reserve in December.

In 2017, Melifonwu appeared in five games for the Raiders and recorded seven tackles and no interceptions or pass defenses.

During his four-year college career at Connecticut, Melifonwu recorded 349 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, 16 pass defenses, two fumble recoveries, and two forced fumble.
