49ers’ Tom Gamble Favorite To Land Jets GM Job?

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that 49ers’ director of player personnel Tom Gamble is the “front runner” to replace Mike Tannenbaum as the Jets GM.

Gamble is viewed as the best fit for the team as they want their next GM to keep head coach Rex Ryan for another season. Both Gamble and Ryan go back more than two decades when their fathers both worked for the Eagles.

Gamble has helped stock the 49ers with talent the last few seasons while maintaining a very competitive team with consistent Pro Bowl caliber players. He also carries a defense-first, run-heavy philosophy which coincides with Ryan.

If Gamble is hired, he would instantly be put to work as the Jets look to make changes to the coaching staff, specifically on the offensive side. Gamble would also need to start making strategic moves to create some much needed cap space and also figure out what to do with the team’s quarterback situation.
