Report: “Stong Possibility” Chargers Trade Up To No. 2 Overall For Marcus Mariota

According to Jason Cole of the Bleacher Report, sources continue to indicate that the Chargers will ultimately reach an agreement with the Titans to trade their No. 17 overall pick and QB Philip Rivers for the No. 2 overall selection.

San Diego would, obviously, take Oregon QB Marcus Mariota to replace Rivers as their starting quarterback. The Chargers believe Mariota would be a great person to have as the face of the franchise, in the event they end up relocating to Los Angeles.

Sources tell Cole that Rivers is aware that the Chargers are unlikely to offer him a long-term contract, as they’re reportedly “extraordinarily concerned” about the condition of his body and the injuries he’s dealt with in recent years.

Cole mentions that Rivers “would love to play out the rest of his career in Tennessee.” The Titans reportedly do not want to rebuild and would instead prefer to have a veteran quarterback like Rivers.

The buzz continues to increase that Rivers could be traded at the start of the 2015 draft.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media has spoken to several Chargers sources regarding Rivers being available for trade. However, none of them sources were willing to rule out a potential trade.

There’s an obvious connection to the Titans, given that they hired former Chargers’ offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt as their head coach last year.

Rivers, 33, is entering the final year of his seven-year, $98.25 million contract that included $38.15 million guaranteed. He stands to make a base salary of $15.57 million for the 2015 season.

Despite dealing with some injuries last  year, Rivers was able to put together another solid season for the Chargers in which he threw for 4,286 yards while completing 66.5 percent of his passes to go along with 31 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 7 quarterback out of 39 qualifying players.
