Jason Cole of B/R reports that there are three big-name head coaches are expected to have interest in the Colts’ head-coaching job after they part ways with Chuck Pagano, which could happen as soon as this evening.
According to Cole, the three coaches he’s referring to are Mike Shanahan, current Saints HC Sean Payton, and Jon Gruden. Cole adds that all of these coaches are believed to have some level of interest in the Colts’ job simply because of the presence of QB Andrew Luck, who is viewed as a premier quarterback.
However, the biggest question from the coaches’ perspective is whether they’ll have final say in decision or if they’ll be forced to work with a general manager. This decision will, of course, be made by team owner Jim Irsay.
Reports from earlier in the day mentioned that there’s still a chance that the Colts could keep Ryan Grigson in place as their GM for at least the time being to help with their coaching search.
Nick Saban’s name has also come up as a potential option for the Colts, but he has turned down several opportunities in the past, so there’s no guarantee he’ll be willing to leave a great situation at Alabama.
We’ll have more regarding the Colts’ head-coaching search as the news is available.
