Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the 49ers are making “significant headway” on a multi-year extension with DL Arik Armstead that would prevent them from having to use the franchise tag on him.
Reports have said for a few weeks now that the 49ers were hoping to sign Armstead to an extension, so this isn’t a big surprise.
The franchise tag would cost the 49ers around $16.126 million fully guaranteed for the 2020 season should they need to use it. However, it wouldn’t prevent them from working on a long-term extension in the coming months.
Armstead, 26, is a former first-round pick out of Oregon by the 49ers in the 2015 NFL Draft. He was in the final year of his four-year, $9.84 rookie contract when the 49ers elected to pick up Armstead’s fifth-year option for the 2019 season.
Armstead is now in line to be an unrestricted free agent in 2020 for the first time in his NFL career.
In 2019, Armstead appeared in all 16 games for the 49ers and recorded 54 tackles, 10 sacks, two forced fumbles, a recovery and two passes defended.
We have him included in our Top 100 – 2020 Free Agents list.
