The San Francisco 49ers surprisingly released QB B.J. Daniels on Tuesday, as well as FB Owen Marecic.

Matt Barrows reports that sources have informed him that the 49ers plan to sign former Cardinals QB John Skelton to take his place on their roster.

Skelton previously worked out for the 49ers last month and just met with Titans this week. Skelton was with the Bengals during training camp, but was not able to beat out Josh Johnson for the backup job.

Daniels will have to pass through waivers before he can sign with a team of his choosing or be placed on San Francisco’s practice squad.
