Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports that the Bears were hoping to hire former Giants HC Pat Shurmur before he reportedly agreed to a deal with the Broncos.
A source tells Biggs that the Bears have expressed interest in former Bengals offensive coordinator Bill Lazor to serve in the same position under HC Matt Nagy.
According to Biggs, the Broncos were able to offer Shurmur the opportunity to call plays and work with QB Drew Lock while Nagy plans to retain play-calling duties and keep Mitch Trubisky in place as their quarterback.
If the Bears do not hire Lazor, Biggs tosses out the possibility of QBs coach Dave Ragone being promoted to coordinator.
Lazor, 47, began his NFL coaching career with the Falcons in 2003 as an offensive quality control coach. From there, Lazor worked for a number of teams including the Redskins, Seahawks, Eagles and Dolphins before the Bengals hired him as their quarterbacks coach in 2016.
After the Bengals fired OC Ken Zampese a few weeks into the 2017 season, Lazor was promoted to offensive coordinator. The Bengals elected to retain Lazor as their offensive coordinator last year.
Cincinnati parted ways with Lazor a few weeks ago after it became clear they were set on hiring Zac Taylor as their next head coach.
In 2018, the Bengals’ offense ranked No. 26 in total yards, No. 17 in points scored, No. 21 in rushing yards and No. 24 in passing yards.
